Frequently Asked Question
A Legal Guardian Letter is an official document issued by a court that appoints an individual as the legal guardian of a minor. It serves as formal proof of the person's legal authority to manage the minor's financial and legal affairs, including opening and operating a bank or investment account on the minor’s behalf. According to SEBI regulations (PDF), a minor’s account must be operated by a guardian until the minor reaches’ adulthood. If the guardian is a biological parent (mother or father), the relationship itself is generally accepted as sufficient proof of guardianship. However, if the guardian is not the biological parent—such as a grandparent, relative, or any other appointed person—a court-issued Legal Guardian Letter is mandatory to validate the guardianship.
