Frequently Asked Question

009. What is the "Mode of Operation" feature in a joint demat account?
Last Updated 8 months ago

CDSL has introduced a "Mode of Operation" feature for joint demat account holders, allowing any single account holder to perform specific operations without needing the signatures of the other holders. Previously, all account holders' signatures were required for transactions in a joint demat account. With this new feature, one joint account holder can now independently carry out these operations without the need for approval from the other holders.

The mode of operation is only applicable for the following operations:

Off-market transfer: Any account holder can transfer securities to other demat accounts without needing the signatures of the other holders.

Pledge: Any account holder can pledge securities with a bank or NBFC without requiring the signatures of the other holders.

Freeze/unfreeze: Any account holder can freeze or unfreeze the securities in the demat account without the need for signatures from the other holders.
